Matthew told us a little about their story we would like to share!
How it started
Matt and Angela met in 2011 when Matt was a freshman at MIT and joined DanceTroupe. Angela was a junior and a choreographer for a hip hop dance that Matt joined. In 2012, Matt joined other dance groups on campus that Angela was also a part of, leading to a friendship which blossomed into a relationship (Angela asked Matt out, for the record). Throughout their time at MIT, Matt and Angela bonded through countless dance practices and hangouts with close friends at Phi Delts.
Moving around
In 2014, Angela moved to San Francisco while Matt finished his senior year at MIT. Matt and Angela reunited in SF soon after when Matt moved there in 2015. For the next few years, the two enjoyed building their life together, including (briefly) dancing in the Bay Area, traveling to many places (Tahoe, Los Angeles, Vegas, and Matt’s first time in Europe & Taiwan) all the while creating memories with good friends. In the fall of 2017, Angela moved to Pittsburgh for grad school. Ever intent on seeing each other as much as possible, Matt and Angela would travel back and forth between San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Seattle where Angela interned between school years. By January of 2019, Angela moved back to San Francisco to reunite with Matt and her network of friends in the Bay Area while finishing her Master’s thesis remotely.
The proposal
On July 3rd, 2019, Matt and Angela got engaged! Matt planned a dinner at the nearby restaurant Benu. While they were at dinner, Matt arranged for the apartment to be set up (thanks Jamie and Vivian!) with Christmas lights, flower petals, a hidden camera (which didn’t work, oh well), and more than 80 framed photos of the couple from the 7 years they had been dating. After going through all the photos, Matt asked Angela to marry him and she said yes! Matt then revealed that he had surreptitiously spent the past 8 months learning Mandarin, which brought Angela to tears. Eight hours later, the couple hopped on the plane to Santa Monica and then Cabo—a surprise trip that Matt planned—to celebrate the engagement.
Nowadays
Matt and Angela spend most of their time at home in the Mission Bay neighborhood in San Francisco. Aside of watching too many YouTube videos, the two enjoy running and biking along the water together and with friends (outdoors + social distancing + masks). They’re really excited for everyone to come together at the wedding to signal the start of their married life!
